Questa famiglia ebbe da principio il nome De Colombi. Si crede che a causa dei molti feudi da essa posseduti ne venisse il nome di "lupi terrae", dal quale derivò quello che attualmente viene conservato. Pare che Diomede, denominato Colombi, sul finire del secolo XI, abbandonasse la patria per stabilirsi a Venezia, ove morì famoso per ampie ricchezze, e la di lui famiglia colà visse, finché Zanetto, con Bartolomeo e Francesco, suoi figli, ritornarono in Ravenna, ove acquistarono moltissimi terreni nel 1513. Sino da allora la casa si divise in due rami, e il primogenito si distingue oggi dall'altro per l'aggiunta del cognome Vorno. A questo ramo appartengono: Bartolomeo che al valore delle armi unì l'amore delle scienze; Dionigio, figlio del precedente, che conseguì dal Cardinale S. Carlo Borromeo i titoli di Conte e Cavaliere nel 1564; Alberto, morto nel 1661 che si applicò con successo alla poesia, Alberto appassionato
