By resolution of 22 June 1848, the civic magistracy of San Miniato proposed the registration of the English class of Colonel Bethel W., an English gentleman, member of Parliament, deputy for the Queen of England on the county of Devonschire, son of the Marquis Giuseppe Leone and straight descendant from Colonel Onofrio, former president and governor of the island of Barbados for the kings Philip IV of Spain, in 1653, marquis of Vallade, count of Parama and Vallaronda and great of Spain of first class. This proposal was sanctioned with a sovereign rescript of 10 August 1848. The family is registered on the Italian Noble Official List with the title of nobleman of San Miniato (male and female), in the person of his descendants from Henry, Bethel, and Joseph. The presence of the motto in the documented bibliography of the family confirms the ancestral nobility of the family. In fact, the origin of the motto dates back to around the 14th century and must be sought in those witty sayings that were written on the banners or flags of the knights, displayed on the windows of the inns where they stayed, during the tournaments, and during the tournaments themselves . The motto was a thought expressed in a few words, alluding to a clear or hidden feeling, to a quality, to a historical memory, as a stimulus to courage or honor. It was chosen by the head of the family, by the knight entering the race or given by the sovereign to his loyal man. Family motto: Bienfaict paieray, injure vangeray.
