Ancient and noble German family, of clear and ancestral virtue, that has worldwide spread, over the centuries. Originally from Brunswick, in Lower Saxony, the family had been ennobled with the title of knights of Holy Roman Empire in the person of Philipp von Westphalen (1724 – 1792), olim Westphal, by Duke Ferdinand of Brunswick, for his military services, on May 23, 1764. He had in fact served as the duke's de facto "chief of staff" during the Seven Years' War. Philipp von Westphalen was the father of Johann Ludwig von Westphalen (July, 11 1770 – March, 3 1842), a liberal Prussian civil servant and the father-in-law of Karl Marx. His daughter Jenny von Westphalen (February, 12 1814 – December, 2 1881) married Karl Marx in 1843. She was a theater critic and a political activist.
