Apelido espanhol muito antigo que representa a transliteração das palavras vascas Etxe berri, "Casa nova", nome do Castelo em que nasceu o mais célebre personagem deste apelido, S.Francisco Xavier, situado na hoje Vila desse nome, em Aoíz, Navarra. Pertencente até ao sécº XIII aos Reis de Navarra doaram-nos eles depois a um ascendente do Santo, D.Aznar, cuja descendente no sécº XV, D.Juana Aznarez, casou com Martim de Azpicuelta. Destes foi filha D.Maria de Azpilcueta Aznarez y Javier, casada com D.Juan de Jassu, Doutor pela Universidade de Bolonha e Conselheiro dos Reis de Navarra, e pais do Santo fundador da Companhia de Jesus, aí nascido em 1506 e falecido na China em 1552.
