Famiglia originaria da Vezzano Ligure; ne è capostipite Montanino, vissuto nella prima metà del sec. XIV. Il più antico documento conservato dalla famiglia è il testamento di Paolo, rogato in Vezzano in domo testatoris l'8 luglio 1483. Con Gaspare (deced. 1525), di Paolo, la famiglia si divide in due rami: l'uno discende da Gerolamo, il cui nipote Giuseppe nel 1582 ottenne la cittadinanza genovese e fu creato nel 1588 pubblico notaro; l'altro da Prospero, il cui figlio Gaspare sposò Veronica de Nobili. Da questo matrimonio nacquero Paolo Emilio (1554-1605), inviato da Clemente VIII nel 1597 quale nunzio straordinario alla Corte di Filippo II, re di Spagna, creato cardinale del titolo di S. Marcello nel 1599, nominato vescovo di Montefiascone nel 1601, e Laura de Nobili, entrato nella carriera ecclesiastica, succedette al fratello nella stessa sede episcoplae, fu nunzio apostolico presso al Repubblica di Venezia dal giugno 1621 all'ottobre 1623, indi
