Nei primi secoli del mille il luogo di Bagnolo, situato poco lungi da Pontecurone, era abitato da una ragguardevole comunità rappresentata da suoi membri ai Consigli comunali di Tortona e Voghera, e retta in signoria da una famiglia che del borgo assunse il nome; del castello esisteva ancora tempo addietro qualche rudere. Le prime notizie del casato si riferiscono ai beni donati il 15 dicembre 1120 da Alberto di Zagnolo e Uberto Capello per la fondazione di un ospedale alla Crocetta in territorio bagnolese; Brunone di Zagnolo, abate di Chiaravalle, ebbe parte preponderante nel mitigare le condizioni di resa di Tortona (16 aprile 1155) con Federico Barbarossa che, dopo l'esodo della popolazione, consegnò la città all'odio dei pavesi per la sua distruzione; Brunone, esacerbato da tanta iniquità, morì di rammarico in breve tempo; il Cavagna Sangiuliani nel suo "Agro Veronese" annovera i Zagnolo tra le famiglie più antiche di
