Da un Imperial privilegio di Federico II, citato dal Villabianca, si rinviene essere questa una nobile ed antichissima famiglia "proveniente da un Raimondo Sanmartino della Guascogna signore di Miger e Tourpes cavaliere di gran valore, e che militando nelle guerre di Terrasanta fu il primo che salito sulle mura della santa città vi piantò lo stendardo, onde in memoria di sì gran fatto l'imperatore suddetto gli concesse il privilegio di potere alzare nel suo blasone l'aquila imperiale, che tiene uno stendardo colle armi gerosolimitane".
