Este antiguo y noble apellido es de origen vasco. Tuvo casas en las villas de Marquina y Durango en la provincia de Vizcaya y en las de Fuenterrabía, Oyarzun, Irún y Ormáiztegui de Guipúzcoa. Una familia de este apellido, originaria de la Isla Tercera de las Azores, a la sazón Colonia portuguésa, se estableció en la Isla de La Palma, en la segunda mitad del siglo XVI. Manuel Hernández Z., vivió casado con Doña Teresa de Medina, con la que fueron padres de nueve hijos. Murió en Santa Cruz de la Palma e hizo testamento el 21 de mayo de 1583. Fue progenitor de los Condes de la Vega Grande de Guadalupe i de la Casa del Castillo en Gran Canaria, así como de otras familias de la más alta Nobleza de la isla de La Palma. Caballeros de este apellido probaron su nobleza en las Ordenes de Santiago, Carlos
