Antico feudo comitale Carolingio prima viscontado dal 1071 e poi marchesato di fatto sotto il potere vicariale. Dalla grande contea di Tintinanno, una parte di antica origine, fu a suo tempo, la rocca di Campiglio assai più antica della contea stessa. Infatti Campiglio d'Orcia fu feudo di una familgia di conti di origine Salica e cioè di conti della famiglia Carolingia, passata in Italia con gli eserciti di Carlo Magno e suoi discendenti. Questa consorteria, ripetesi di Sovrana e Salica esistenza, signoreggiò nel Senese e Grossetano, Sarteano, Fighine, San Casciano dei Bagni, marsciano ed altri luoghi della Valle del Paglia, di Orcia, delle Chiane dell'Ombrone senese. Assai grande questo comitato, per cui nei tempi avanti il mille, i dominanti di Campiglio, furono correntemente conosciuti sotto il nome di Visconti.
