Procede de la anteiglesia de Z., del partido de Bilbao (Vizcaya), y es uno de los linajes que tomaron parte más intensa en las luchas de los bandos en Vizcaya. De él descienden otras muchas familias que se citan en las "Bienandanzas e Fortunas". Un hijo de un Rey navarro fué nombrado por su padre Conde de Gaviria, en Guipúzcoa, región entonces navarra. Se llamaba Ordoño y fué padre de Galindo Ordóñez, quien, desterrado por su Rey, pasó a Vizcaya y se estableció en la mencionada anteiglesia de Z., donde casó con una nieta del Conde de Noroña. Tuvo sucesión que continuó el apellido y entroncó con los linajes de Avendaño y Butrón. El 7 de Julio de 1627 el Rey don Felipe IV creó el Vizcondado de Areste a favor de doña Leonor de Z.
