Famiglia originaria di Auronzo, di antica e nobile tradizione, propagatasi, nel corso dei secoli, in diverse regioni d'Italia. La cognominizzazione, assai antica, è una patronimia di un capostipite che si chiamava Zan o Zanni, versione dialettale di Giovanni. E' comune opinione tra gli studiosi di araldica che questa casata abbia il proprio ceppo originario nei Giacomo e che discenda da un Giacomo, detto il Maestro d'Ungheria, cistercense ungherese fiorito nei secoli XII e XIII. Contro i nobili e il clero reclutò gruppi di popolani nel Brabante, in Piccardia e nell'Hainaut, per liberare il re fatto prigioniero nella crociata del 1250 e per conquistare Gerusalemme. Giacomo fu ucciso dai nobili francesi e le sue bande vennero disperse, suo figlio, Zanni di Giacomo, riparò con la madre ed i suoi fratelli in Veneto.
