Fu tra le prime fondatrici di Venezia, ed amministrò più volte il tribunato nei primordi del governo repubblicano. Sebastiano, creato Doge nel 1173, maneggiò felicemente la riconciliazione dell'Imperatore Federico Barbarossa col papa Alessandro III. Pietro suo figlio, che avea sposato Costanza figlia di Tancredi re di Sicilia, gli succedette nella dignità di Doge nel 1205. Fu confermata nell'avita nobiltà con sovrana risoluzione 1 Dic. 1817. Il cognome è una derivazione di Giovanni, Zaun, Zane, Zan, Zanus, è diffuso nel circondario di Pordenone; a Visinale nacque nella seconda metà del 1700 Perina Zanussi madre di Comparetti Giovanni Battista. I membri della famiglia di Aviano, ricchi ed assai influenti, occuparono spesse volte la carica di Podestà; il primo fu nel 1500 Victor de Zanussi; il secondo è Pasuto de Zanusso nel 1533 al quale fa seguito Stefano nel 1557 e Matteo nel 1599.
