Questa famiglia trae l'origine del suo cognome dalla fiorente provincia Carnica, ed anzi nel bellunese la voce Carniello indica l'antica e nobilissima arte dei tessitori. I più remoti ricordi, a noi conosciuti, dei C., Carniel o Carnelli ed anche Cagnel, si trovano nella risposta (ottobre? 1324) del vicario del patriarca di Aquileja al dove di Venezia, nella quale si viene ad un accordo con Marco Carnielli, nipote del patriarca di Grado per certi danni da lui sofferti. Dall'esame di latri documenti si comprende che nei secoli XIV e XV vissero a Venezia, dove acquistarono un posto distinto tra le famiglie più notabili. Nel 1482 viveva tranquillo nella città delle lagune il sacerdote Santo Carnelli fu Alberto. Egli abitava nella sua casa "posita in confin de S. Marcora in loco chiamato la piscina". Aveva una fioza Maria Carnieli la quale dimorava in casa de misser lo piovan de S. Cassan. Il
