Antigua e ilustre familia friulana, conocida como Zannier y Zanier, se extendió a lo largo de los siglos por diversas regiones de Italia. Una sucursal a principios del siglo XIX trasladó su residencia a Rovinj. Cuenta la leyenda que este apellido deriva de la isla griega de Zakynthos, presunto origen de la familia. En realidad es fruto de un patronímico, derivado del friulano "Zuan", diminutivo de Giovanni. Nos encontramos con una variante que se acerca al apellido Zannier en Cividale, en 1374: «Johanni dicto Zener». Demuestra tanto la derivación directa de Zener del nombre latino Johannes, como la afirmación de esta forma desde el siglo XIV. Esta hipótesis también es apoyada por los datos del siglo XVII en el libro de los muertos de Socchieve: el párroco que registra la muerte de tres miembros de la misma familia escribe primero Zenar, luego Zuanir, luego Zanir, como para ayudarnos a comprender

Blasone presunto che vuolsi proprio dell'originario ceppo friulano della famiglia Zannier ma la cui fonte è purtroppo ad oggi ignota.
