Antichissima ed illustre famiglia, di origine toscana, detta Zanotto o Zanotta, le cui prime vestigia si rinvengono nel secolo decimo primo, ossia quando viveva il miles crucisegnato Zano (o Iano o Giano). Il casato, nel corso dei secoli, si propagò in diverse regioni d'Italia e, in particolare, in Veneto, Emilia-Romagna e Piemonte. Il ramo di rimini ebbe anche un beato e da esso pervenne anche quel Tommaso, medico, che si stanziò, poi, in Venezia. In quest'ultima città il ramo, ascritto all'ordine cittadinesco originario, ebbe spesso contatti con il ramo di Montagnana e da esso giugerà, nel 1514, a Pordenone, in qualità di Governatore, il dottor Nicolò. Dei membri famigliari "veneziani", Andreas e Ioannes, frati-cavalieri dell'Ordine della Povera Militia del Tempio di Salomone, morirono combattendo a San Giovanni d'Acri, nel 1291, assieme ad altri 18 confratelli e il loro Gran Maestro, per permettere alle ultime famiglie di trovare rifugio nella
