Antica ed assai nobile famiglia spagnola, originaria dei Paesi Baschi, di chiara ed avita virtù, conosciuta come Zapirain o Zapiraín, propagatasi, primieramente, in Inghilterra e, nel corso dei secoli, in diverse regioni europee. La chiara nobiltà della famiglia risulta confermata dalla presenza, della sua blasonatura, nella pregevole opera "Blasonario della Consanguinidad Iberica, 1979 secunda edicion" dell'Istituto Salazar e Castro. Le prime notizie relative a tal casato si hanno in relazione alla battaglia di Las Navas de Tolosa. Si dice, infatti, che proprio un membro di tal famiglia fosse colui che si appropriò del celebre arazzo "pendón de las Navas". I riferimenti al casato si fanno sempre più frequenti tra il XV ed il XIX secolo, in particolare in riferimento ai cavalieri che accompagnarono il futuro re D. Filippo II, figlio ed erede di Carlo V, da la Coruña a Southampton, nel 1554, per le celebrazioni del suo matrimonio con Maria
