Famiglia di Catania insignita del titolo di nobile, di barone della Tonnara di Fiume, di Noto e Caponero, titolo proveniente da Maria Giuseppa Tornabene. Con decreto ministeriale del 10 giugno 1898 il signor Carlo Zappal Asmundo (di Carlo, di Giuseppe), col figlio Raffaele e col fratello Giuseppe, ottenne riconoscimento del titolo di nobile, titolo che, con decreto ministeriale del 20 settembre 1911, venne riconosciuto al signor Giuseppe Zappal (di Raffaele, di Giuseppe) padre di Maria, Caterina, Raffaele insieme col titolo di barone della Tonnara di Fiume di Noto e Caponero e, con decreto ministeriale del 30 maggio 1902, al signor Giuseppe Zappal, di Carlo, di Giovan Battista. Con decreto reale del 15 giugno 1905, susseguito da Regie Lettere Patenti del 14 gennaio 1906 venne concesso tanto ad un altro Carlo Zappal Asmundo quanto a Giuseppe Zappal Asmundo il titolo trasmissibile di barone.
