Antichissima è l'origine di questa famiglia, e pare che prima si denominasse Samprosperi o da S. Prospero, e dalla Selice, e avesse il titolo di signore di quel castello o luogo. Certo è che da questa famiglia uscirono uomini insigni, quali senatori, ambasciatori e gonfalonieri, che era la carica più elevata che occupar potesse un cittadino d'Imola, in cui il gonfalonierato era dato soltanto ai dodici membri di famiglie magnatizie, scelti dai sessanta consiglieri che reggevano la città. Da questa famiglia uscirono altresì letterati e poeti, e uomini d'armi. Nel 1622 la famiglia fu aggregata al patriziato romano, nel 1747 al patriziato imolese, nel 1804 al patriziato di S. Marino e nel 1822 alla nobiltà di Bologna. Augusto II, re di Polonia, con diploma del 15 ottobre 1718, conferì il titolo di marchese alla celebre poetessa Faustina Moratti, vedova di giambattista, ed ai figli Luigi Evangelista e Livia ed ai
