Antichissima ed illustre famiglia, che ha dato alla patria molti senatori, conservatori, ambasciatori e gonfalonieri, ed un numero non esiguo di letterati e poeti. Paolo, di Matteo, assai prode ed esperto capitano, prese servigio alla Corte di Cipro ed ebbe varie missioni diplomatiche presso diverse corti in qualità di ambasciatore, e diede prove in esse di molta solerzia ed ingegno. Nel 1433 venne elevato alla dignità di siniscalco e di primo favorito della regina Caterina Cornaro. Nel 1622 la famiglia fu aggregata al patriziato romano, e nella prima metà del XIX secolo alla nobiltà di Bologna. Augusto II re di Polonia, con diploma 15 ottobre 1718, conferì il titolo ereditario di marchese alla celebre poetessa Faustina Maratti, vedova di Giambattista Zappi, ed ai figli Luigi Evangelista e Livia ed ai loro legittimi discendenti.
