Sehr alte und berühmte Familie, die viele Heimatsenatoren, Konservative, Botschafter und Gonfaloniere in ihr Land brachte, und nicht wenige Männer von Briefen und Dichtern. Paolo von Matteo, ein sehr mutiger und erfahrener Kapitän, diente am Hof von Zypern und hatte verschiedene diplomatische Vertretungen bei verschiedenen Gerichten als Botschafter, und er gab in ihnen viel Fleiß und Einfallsreichtum Zeugnis. 1433 wurde er zur Würde von Siniscal und zum ersten Favoriten von Königin Caterina Cornaro erhoben. 1622 wurde die Familie dem römischen Patriziat und in der ersten Hälfte des 19. Jahrhunderts dem Adel von Bologna angeschlossen. August II., König von Polen, verlieh dem berühmten Dichter Faustina Maratti, der Witwe von Giambattista Zappi, und seinen Söhnen Luigi Evangelista und Livia und ihren rechtmäßigen Nachkommen den erblichen Marquis-Titel.
