Famille très ancienne et illustre, qui a donné au pays de nombreux sénateurs, conservateurs, ambassadeurs et gonfaloniers, et un nombre non négligeable d'écrivains et de poètes. Paolo, di Matteo, un capitaine très courageux et expert, a servi à la Cour de Chypre et a eu diverses missions diplomatiques auprès de diverses cours en tant qu'ambassadeur, et y a fait preuve de beaucoup de diligence et d'ingéniosité. En 1433, il fut élevé à la dignité de sénéchal et premier favori de la reine Caterina Cornaro. En 1622, la famille fut agrégée au patriciat romain, et dans la première moitié du XIXe siècle à la noblesse de Bologne. Auguste II, roi de Pologne, avec un diplôme le 15 octobre 1718, conféra le titre héréditaire de marquis à la célèbre poétesse Faustine Maratti, veuve de Giambattista Zappi, et à ses enfants Luigi Evangelista et Livia et leurs descendants légitimes.
