Storica famiglia napoletana, derivata dall'illustre casa Caracciolo, e propriamente da Gregorio di Giovanni Caracciolo, vissuto nel secolo XII. Si divise in due grandi diramazioni dette della Spina e della Stadera. Fu capostipite dei Zarafa della Spina Andrea, familiare della regina Giovanna I e che seguì Carlo III di Durazzo nella guerra d'Ungheria. Capostipite dei Zarafa della Stadera fu Tommaso, figlio di Bartolomeo. Rami principali della prima sono: i principi di Roccella e del S. R. I.; i duchi di Forlì; i duchi di Traetto. I Zarafa della Stadera si distinsero in cinque rami principali, che si suddivisero in altri minori. 1° I Marchesi di Montesardo (estinti).2° I duchi di Andria, conti di Ruvo. 3° I principi di Chiusano, conti di Monteclavo. 4° I conti di Mondragone, principi di Stigliano, marchesi di S.
