Di questa famiglia, che diramò da Tortona in Alessandria, Mondovì, Savigliano, Fossano, Torino, le prime notizie reperite iniziano dall'anno 1122. Discendenti dai signori di Foro - località situata sulla strada di Oviglio, a neppure dieci chilometri da Alessandria, ora denominata Villa del Foro - i Zaratta, pur vivendo nelle terre dei loro possessi, ne alternavano la residenza con Tortona, sin dal secolo precedente, quando cioè Alessandria non esisteva ancora. Godevano, tra le famiglie preminenti della città, stima ed influenza tanto da partecipare, appunto nel 1122, alla costituzione del "Comune Signorile di Tortona", che consolidò l'ordinamento delle magistrature e relativi poteri giurisdizionali, da cui l'attributo onorifico di "De Civitate Terdona" ai membri di dette casate. Nel 1132, Ugo Zaratta è teste in atto del 26 marzo, relativo ad un manso alla Frascheta di cui i consoli tortonesi investono Oberto Scopelli ed Anselmo Bussinello e dell'istrumento del 24 aprile 1149, col quale
