Antica ed assai nobile famiglia spagnola, di chiara ed avita virtù, propagatasi in Italia nel secolo decimo quinto. I primi riferimenti al casato si hanno già nel secolo decimo primo. Alcuni Zardo, infatti, figurano tra i cavalieri crociati che andarono al seguito di Raimondo Berengario, detto il Grande, nella Prima Crociata. In ogni modo, già nel XV secolo in Italia la famiglia Zardo appare divisa in due rami principali: l'uno dimorante in territorio veneto, ove possedette terreni nel padovano e nel trevigiano, ed in Piemonte. Sempre in Veneto, da una diramazione borghese della famiglia Zardo, nacque Angela Zardo, madre del massimo esponente del Neoclassicismo Antonio Canova (Possagno, 1º novembre 1757 – Venezia, 13 ottobre 1822). Il ramo piemontese della famiglia, invece, si è propagato anche in Sardegna, con un Giovanni, vice conservatore del patrimonio reale. Il di lui figlio Ferdinando acquistò una signoria e partecipò al parlamento di Alfonso V.
