Fiorì secondo riferisce il Mugnos, nobilissima in Firenze la famiglia Zati così detta da una antica villa nella Toscana. Altri la vuole derivata dalla famiglia Alberti; ma il Rubberto de Geronimo, scrittore della nobiltà fiorentina, le dà origine da quel Zato nativo della Turingia valoroso capitano dell'imperatore Ottone, col quale passò in Italia nel 940, fermandosi nella Toscana. Nel farsi il secondo cerchio delle mura di Firenze nel 1313, Giovanni volle a proprie spese farne costruire 155 braccia in prossimità delle sue case.
