Antica ed assai nobile famiglia siciliana, originaria però di Firenze, conosciuta come Zati o Zatti, di chiara ed avita virtù, propagatasi, nel corso dei secoli, in diverse regioni d'Italia. Alcuni autori vogliono che essa sia dello stesso stipite degli Alberti da Catenaja, altri che tragga origine dalla Turingia e che abbia avuto a capostipite Zato, capitano al servizio dell’imperatore Ottone I, passato in Toscana l’anno 940. In ogni modo, gli Zati o Zatti furono molto ricchi e potenti in Firenze. Nel farsi il secondo cerchio delle mura di Firenze nel 1313, Giovanni volle a proprie spese farne costruire 155 braccia in prossimità delle sue case. Filippo fu uno dei più ricchi negozianti del suo secolo e tenne casa bancaria in Parigi, dove morì nel 1338.
