Antica famiglia originaria da Forlì. Tra questa città e Forlimpopoli esiste tuttora una località detta Val Zauli. Si diramò poi a Castrocaro, Modigliana, Brisighella, Montepolo, Dovadola, Terra del Sole e Faenza. Nel sec. XIII troviamo un Girolamo ed un Benvenuto. Capostipite certo è un Nicola (1354), padre di Giovanni (1451), da cui Ridolfo, che ebbe Baldo (1562), che sposò Fiore, di Bartolomeo Fabbri dalle Spianate, che ebbe Sante (1571), che ebbe per moglie Margherita Orioli, e fu padre di Giov. Battista (n. 29 marzo 1606, dec. 1682), che sposò Lucrezia Tartagni, aggregato alla nobiltà di Faenza il 24 dicembre 1652, e di Ridolfo, visitatore apostolico. Dal predetto Giovan Battista vennero in luce: Domenico (n. 1637, dec. 1722), vescovo di Veroli, vice gerente di Roma, assessore al S. uffizio e poi arcivescovo di Teodosia e che nel 1697 ottenne, per il fratello e per nipoti, la nobiltà romana.
