Basandosi sulla tradizione domestica, i membri della famiglia asseriscono d'essere provenienti da Arona donde li avrebbe condotti a Cesena un Cecco, che appunto diede il nome alla famiglia (Cecco d'Arona); ma pare più probabile che essa si sia trasferita in città da Sant'Egidio, luogo del cesenate. Gode del patriziato di Cesena (m.) avendo da tempo assai remoto occupato un seggio del consiglio del comune, e di quello di S. Marino (m.), per concessione del Consiglio principe della Repubblica a Carlo, Giovanni e Lodovico di Giulio, in data 13 luglio 1760. Dal primo di questi tre fratelli nacque nel 1757 Pier Domenico, coi cui figli Carlo (n. 1797) e Fabrizio (n. 1800) la casa si divise in due rami.
