La famiglia, d'illustre nobilissimo ceppo, dall'Oriente venne a trapiantarsi nelle isolette adiacenti a Venezia, ed avanti il X secolo era nel numero delle famiglie notabili, ed avanti la serrata del maggior Consiglio nel 1297 contava già procuratori di S. Marco e generali da mare. Reniero, dopo aver comandato l'armata contro i Genovesi, fu eletto Doge, tra l'8, il 15 e il 25 gennaio del 1253; si trattava di Renier o Ranieri Zen. Uomo d'armi di primo piano come generale da mar, ossia comandante in capo della flotta in mare, nella riconquista di Zara del 1244 e stretto collaboratore di Jacopo Tiepolo nell'impresa di Ferrara del 1240, aveva svolto anche funzione di ambasciatore al concilio di Lione e ricoperto la carica di podestà in diverse città. In tale veste a Verona aveva fatto costruire la chiesa di S. Francesco, mentre a Bologna era incorso nella scomunica perchè aveva convinto i cittadini
