Antica e nobile famiglia ferrarese, fregiata del titolo marchionale, le cui prime memorie si riferiscono ad un Branca Zerbinati che vivea alla Corte di Nicolò III. Antonio-Maria nel 1509 fu soprastante alle munizioni e preparativi di guerre del duca Alfonso I contro i Veneziani; altro Antonio-Maria, uno dei più famosi capitani del XVI secolo, si pose al servizio del Re di Francia, e ne ottenne la decorazione di S. Michele; Luigi fu gentiluomo commensale in Fiandra dell'Arciduca Ernesto, poi fece la campagna di Fiandra sotto l'arcidua Alberto, e ritornato in patria fu nominato mastro di campo delle truppe pontificie e nel 1614 da Paolo V fu fatto governatore di Ancona. Un ramo di questa famiglia si trapiantò in Venezia.
