Famiglia tra le più antiche e potenti di Verona, dove nel X secolo era in rinomanza Golia di questa stirpe. Essa possedette antichi feudi e giurisdizioni nella valle di Pigozzo, passati poi nella famiglia Pigozzi. Guglielmo ebbe nel 1215 la carica di podestà di Cerea, e nel 1239 fu bandito colla confisca dei beni dall'Imperatore Federico. Guidotto fu fautore di Ezellino, ed avendo questo tiranno nel 1250 fatti prigionieri i podestà di Brescia e Mantova, li fece rinchiudere nelle prigioni dei Zerli; Zerlotto, Giacomo e Bonifacio nel 1277 congiurarono contro Mastino I della Scala; Alberto fu creato cavaliere da Alberto della Scala; Guglielmo nel 1512 entrò nel nobile Consiglio, e fu anche del Collegio dei giudici.
