Di origine genovese, questa famiglia è stata fondata nelle Isole Canarie da Don Santos Z., nato a Genova nel 1817. Era figlio di Don Tomás Z. e Doña Isabel Libori. Don Santos Z. si sposò ad Arrecife (Lanzarote), dove si stabilì con Doña Micaela Herrera Martín il 20 giugno 1843. Da questo matrimonio nacquero: Don Elías Dionisio Z. e Herrera il 6 aprile 1848, che sposò Doña Armenia Castro y Febles ad anta Cruz de Tenerife nel 1879. Fu uno scrittore eminente e fondò la "Revista de Canarias" nel 1878, "quella con il valore più scientifico nella nostra regione nel XIX secolo". Don Tomás de los Dolores Z. y Herrera, gloria della medicina delle Canarie, nacque il 14 settembre 1850 e si sposò a La Orotava con Doña Isabel Fuentes e Gonzáles.
