De origen genovés, esta familia fue fundada en Canarias, por Don Santos Z., nacido en Génova en 1817. Era hijo de Don Tomás Z. y de Doña Isabel Libori. Don Santos Z. contrajo matrimonio en Arrecife (Lanzarote), donde se estableció, con Doña Micaela Herrera Martín, el 20 de junio de 1843. De este matrimonio nacieron: Don Elías Dionisio Z. y Herrera, el 6 de abril de 1848, que casó con Doña Armenia Castro y Febles en anta Cruz de Tenerife en 1879. Fue un eminente literato y fundó la "Revista de Canarias" en 1878, "la de más valor científico de nuestra región en el siglo XIX". Don Tomás de los Dolores Z. y Herrera, gloria de la Medicina canaria, nació el 14 de septiembre de 1850 y casó en La Orotava con Doña Isabel Fuentes y Gonzáles.
