Antico ed illustre casato, diviso in due principali diramazioni, l'una originaria di Ceruno di Casola Valsenio, in provincia di Ravenna, e l'altra di Lepreno di Serina, in provincia di Bergamo, propagatosi, nel corso dei secoli, in diverse regioni d'Italia. Le due famiglie, con larga probabilità, si unirono tra il XIV ed il XV secolo, dal momento che, entrambe, vantano, tra i loro ascendenti, quel Matteo Zeroni, bergamasco, padre di quel Giovanni, detto "Il Lanciere". In ogni modo, la leggenda vuole che il fondatore della casata sia un antico cavaliere, al servizio di Carlo Magno, il quale, stanco della vita di milizia, decise di ritirarsi a vita privata, sul Monte Cervino.
