Ancienne famille originaire de la région de Parme, de vertu claire et ancestrale, répartie au cours des siècles dans diverses régions d'Italie. L'origine de ce patronyme, selon d'illustres généalogistes, doit être recherchée dans la fraction homonyme de la commune de Palanzano, lieu de naissance de l'ancêtre, que certains verraient dans ce Francesco da Zibana, ambassadeur des Rossi, envoyé à Parme, en 1404, fin pour mettre fin à la sanglante guerre civile. Cette famille, en tout cas, fut probablement décorée de la chevalerie, suite aux fidèles services rendus par un Alberto, porte-étendard de la Sainte Église Romaine, au général Jacopo Boncompagni (Bologne, 8 mai 1548 - Sora, 18 août 1612). Mais, d'un autre côté, la famille a toujours réussi à se démarquer, grâce aux hautes personnalités, auxquelles elle a donné naissance.
