Antigua e ilustre familia veneciana, con residencia en Padua, que se extendió a lo largo de los siglos en varias regiones de Italia. El origen de esta cognominación, según los genealogistas autorizados, debe buscarse en un patronímico compuesto por el prefijo "zi-" (= tío), que debe entenderse como un título de respeto atribuido a las personas mayores y al personal de "Nano". En cualquier caso, los miembros de la familia Zignani acumularon una gran riqueza gracias al comercio, tanto que, a fines del siglo XI, habían erigido un palacio noble en Via Maggiore, en Padua.
