La famiglia è originaria da Alemanno (Bergamo) ma ha avuto la cittadinanza e la nobiltà di Bergamo. In un atto del notaio Pietro Panizoli 25 febbraio 1376 è ricordata Fiorina da Fossate vedova di Pietro qm. Alberto qm. Giovanni de' Canuti di Almenno, cittadino di Bergamo, abitante nella vicina di S. Leonardo. Nel 1582 venne riconosciuta dalla città di Bergamo l'originaria cittadinanza. In un documento 8 novembre 1698 sono ricordati Bartolomeo e Vincenzo figli di Giacomo. Bartolomeo nel 1612 acquistò i feudi di Madone. Francesca, 1645, fu moglie in secondi voti del conte Giacomo Suardi e in terzi voti di Marcantonio Bresciani. Il 20 maggio 1780 venne rilasciata una dichiarazione di nobiltà a Giovan Angelo e nel 1792 a D. Bartolomeo qm. Vincenzo. Oltre i beni di Madone altri ne possedevano ad Osio Sotto ed a La Torre presso Chiuduno. Nel Consiglio di Bergamo sono iscritti Vincenzo, 1756, Giovan Angelo,
