Famiglia di origine longobarda, assai antica e nobile, detta Zoder, Zodler o più anticamente Czodeler, propagatasi, nel corso dei secoli, in diverse regioni d'Europa. Tal casato, sul calar del secolo XIII, venne fregiato del titolo di Cavaliere, con concessione dell'uso dello stemma, da Carlo IV (1346 - 1378). in merito agli importanti servizi resogli. La più antica, e, probabilmente, prima, dimora della famiglia, si rinviene nella cittadina di Gorlitz, ove: nel 1455, uno Stefan coprì la carica di "Provveditore municipale"; un Nicolaus, nel 1554, è ricordato come proprietario di molti feudi mentre un Taschler, nel 1565, è nominato in qualità di consigliere cittadino. Molti, inoltre, furono i membri della famiglia che si distinsero nelle opere diplomatiche, e, probabilmente, fu uno di essi che trapiantò la propria stirpe, intorno al tardo XVI secolo, in Friuli, dando vita al ramo italiano della famiglia.
