La famiglia è orginaria di Siena, dove esercitavano la mercatura, commerciando in zendadi e stoffe preziose. Da questa loro professione derivò, nel XIII secolo, il cognome della famiglia. Aringhieri, Zondadaio, è il più antico membro conosciuto di questa discendenza; abitava in Camollìa e si trova ricordato ai libri dello Spedale, nell'anno 1262, mentre nel 1266 Barota è ricordato in un consiglio tenuto nella chiesa di S. Cristoforo. Nel 1375 si trova Ciampoli, di Pietro, segnato nei libri pubblici senesi, e nel 1385 Paolo, di Sozzo. Nel 1397 Bartolomeo, di Ghinuccio, era provveditore di Biccherna, e due anni dopo la stessa carica era occupata da Agnolo, di maestro Vanni. Nel 1401 poi la famiglia fece parte della Signoria con questo stesso Agnolo, di Vanni; nel 1412, Salvestro, di Meo, di Vanni, era console della Mercanzia, mentre il di lui fratello Giovanni fu gonfaloniere del terzo di Camollìa nel 1431.
