A família é originária de Siena, onde negociavam, trocando zendadis e tecidos preciosos. O sobrenome da família veio dessa profissão no século XIII. Aringhieri, Zondadaio, é o membro mais antigo conhecido dessa linhagem; ele morou em Camollìa e é mencionado nos livros de Spedale, no ano de 1262, enquanto em 1266 Barota é lembrado em um conselho realizado na igreja de S.
