Ha per stipite questa antica famiglia Ruffino che fu console di Alessandria il 2 giugno 1177. Si denominarono pure Gambarotta in seguito al matrimonio di Saglino, di Giacomo, il quale avendo sposato Agnesina Gambarotta, il suocero Giacomo gli fece obbligo, per atto del 10 aprile 1355, di assumere il suo cognome. Figlio di Saglino fu Quirico, che era notaio, e che ebbe l'investitura del feudo di Castelnuovo Bormida dal marchese di Monferrato il 19 aprile 1421. Sposò (1378) Carencia di Nicola Buzzi, e da queste nozze nacquero: Antonio e Ottolino, il primo, che fu podestà di Savona e castellano di Cassine, fu investito di Castelnuovo Bormida col fratello Ottolino il 27 sett. 1443. Da Antonio i discendenti riassunsero l'omonimo cognome. Antonio aveva avuto in concessione dalla città di Savona di unire alle proprie l'arma di questa città, privilegio poi confermato con successivi provvedimenti. Gerardino, di Gio.
