Le prime memorie certe di questa famiglia rimontano al XIII secolo. Un Ugolino Zorli capostipite di essa fu dei principali del partito ghibellino che dopo aver osteggiato in patria la parte avversa si accordò alla pace stipulata in Bagnacavallo nella chiesa di S. Michele 28 Feb. 1263. 1 suoi discendenti seguirono lo stesso partito con svariate vicende, ed ebbe re quasi sempre grande autorità in patria, e furono del Consiglio e degli anziani del Comune. Quando poi Bagnacavallo passò sotto il dominio degli Estensi, i Zorli furono da quei principi adoperati in negozii importanti e in diverse guise onorati. Difatti un Giovanni Zorli era da essi nel 1503 spedito loro castaido a Monastirolo; un Bernardino più tardi era fatto contestabile e cavaliere, ed impiegato dal duca Alfonso in negozii gelosi e in ambascerie importanti, come quella ad Isabella d'Aragona duchessa di Milano; ed un Francesco che il 1 Feb. 1322
