Antica famiglia faentina propagata, nel corso del tempo, in diverse regioni limitrofe. Nel 1680 troviamo Francesco Maria, di Giacomo, fra i consiglieri nobili in Faenza. Da questi e da Francesca Cattani il 24 marzo 1679, nacque Carlo, che sposò Claudia Zannoni e nel 1732, ebbe Giuseppe, marito di Ottavia Zauli, e padre di Giovanni, n. il 27 dicembre 1780. Questi sposò Carolina Rampi, dalla quale, il 19 aprile 1824, nacque Vincenzo capostipite dei rami di cui oggi è composta la famiglia. Questa famiglia come altre famiglie patrizie romagnole, nel scorso secolo usarono il titolo comitale senza avere avuto una regolare investitura, e per regolarizzare questa situazione di fatto, S.M. il Re, con Regio Decreto di motuproprio 3 novembre 1907 e Regie Lettere Patenti 23 aprile 1908, riconosceva il titolo di conte ai discendenti, legittimi e naturali maschi da maschi, da Vincenzo Z., patrizio di Faenza, ivi morto il 9 febbraio
