Di origine fiorentina, la si trova già nel XI secolo numerosa e potente in Firenze, dove occupava le più eminenti magistrature. Difatto molti di questa casa furono consoli, consiglieri del podestà, consoli dei militi, ambasciatori ecc., e la storia ci à lasciato memoria di un Nerlo che essendo console di Firenze nel 1203 fece fabbricare il castello di Montelupo destinato a tener in rispetto e domare la potenza dei conti, di Capraja. Nella prima metà del XV secolo, la discendenza dei Sizzo si diramò in diverse città d'Italia e dell'estero, ed un Jacopo, recatosi in Francia per ragion di commericio, si rese così accetto alla regina Caterina de' Medici che ebbe da questa cariche luminose ed insigni favori, e morendo lasciò a' propri figli le ricche castellanie di Avaray e Montricard nei dintorni di Blois.
