Se ne à memoria fino dal 1095. Presero il cognome da Rubiera, luogo di lor signoria, posto sulla Secchia tra Modena e Reggio. Ebbero in feudo Casalgrande, Dinizzano, Arceto, Salvaterra e Montabbio. Niccolò Vescovo di Ferrara nel 1400; Pietro e Carlo Vescovi di Modena. Diversi furono governatori e podestà. Un ramo passato in Ferrara fu devotissimo agli Estensi, ed ottenne i primi onori cittadini. Tra i letterati della casa Boiardo merita special menzione il celebre poeta Conte Matteo, autore dell'Orlando innamorato, governatore di Reggio, capitano del popolo di Modena, e signore di Scandiano. (Estinta nel 1560). Fu costume delle più antiche famiglie, le quali dopo la caduta del Romano Imperio, in quella inondatione de' Barbari, havendo i loro cognomi, sicome gli studi, e altre cose belle smarrito e restati solo con semplici nomi, trarre di nuovo i loro cognomi, e il loro casato da' nomi proprii paterni, e de' maggiori.
