Antico ed assai nobile casato portoghese, detto Caiado o Calado, di chiara ed avita virtù, propagatosi, nel corso dei secoli, in diverse regioni d'Europa e del Mondo. Le prime notizie certe relative alla famiglia Caiado si hanno con un Lourenço C., "vedor da Justiça" e ufficiale giudiziario del confine, sotto il regno di Alfonso IV. Al tempo di Alfonso V, fioriva un Martim Caiado, scudiero della Casa Reale, maestro di un nipote dello stesso re e Sindaco delle colline di Lisbona. Lo stesso venne, successivamente, nominato Cavaliere e "contador da comarca" di Setubal. La regina Isabel, madre di D. João II, creò il detto Martim "cavaleiro da casa" del principe, come risulta da una carta del maggio 1486.
