Antico casato di Tortona, di chiara ed avita virtù, propagatosi, nel corso dei secoli, in diverse regioni d'Italia. Il primo documento che riguarda la famiglia è la sentenza pronunciata 25 Settembre 1174 dai consoli di Tortona, trai quali un D' Ambrosio, relativa ad una vertenza tra i Guidobono ed i Malvino per l'accesso ad una vigna di quest'ultimi (Carte Capit., I 92); nel 1195 il corpo consolare, di cui era membro Aiamerico D' Ambrosio, per fronteggiare impegni indilazionabili impose un tributo sopra le some, e gl'inventari di ciascuna persona (Annali, I 330); lo stesso Aiamerico il 29 ottobre 1196 interviene alla sottomissione dei Signori di Mongiardino ai consoli tortonese (Chartarium, 45); il 7 luglio 1197 Guglielmo di ser D' Ambrosio, credendario, delibera in merito ad un mutuo che il Comune di Tortona, contrae con Boccardo Porco di Pavia per estinguere un debito tuttora insoluto con il marchese Alberto Malaspina (id.,
