La famiglia è antichissima e nota in Ungheria da tempo immemorabile. Si vuole sia discesa da qualche secolo in Croazia a Capo di una colonia militare mantenendosi sempre fedele per tradizione alla madre patria. Nel 1401, a quanto dicono vecchie scritture, trovavasi già in possesso di terre nobili a Grobnik (Grohovo), a Drasdine, a Ratulje, non troppo lontano da Fiume. Partecipò alla difesa del paese contro le continue scorrerie turche, culminate nelle invasioni del 1595 (incendio di Grobnik) e del 1601. Dalla sanguinosa battaglia di Grobnik (1601) di cui resta vivo il ricordo a Fiume e che segnò il crollo della grande invasione nell'Istria, crebbero i Marsanik - secondo è fama nella regione - in fortuna ed influenza. Certo, risulta dai documenti che essi seguirono a lungo le sorti degli Zrinyi (a loro legati anche da vincoli di sangue), i quali guidarono, contro gli Asburgo, l'ultima lotta per la libertà
