Famiglia di origine normanna, detta Aquila, Dell'Aquila o dell'Aquila, le cui prime memorie risalgono ad un Riccardo, feudatario in Terra del Lavoro, vivente nel 1090. Salita rapidamente in potenza, al tempo degli Svevi, possedè numerosi feudi, quali Cerinola, Traetto, Itri Riardo, ed i contadi di Avellino, Calvi, Montesantangelo, Fondi, per cui un ramo si disse di Fondi. Un secondo Riccardo, conte di Fondi, fu uno dei più potenti feudatari del suo tempo; un terzo Riccardo, grande ammiraglio dei re Guglielmo I e II; ed infine Ruggero e Riccardo quarto, furono valorosi capitani dell'imper. Federico II. Questa casa ha dato anche un cardinale alla chiesa nella persona di Pietro vissuto intorno al 1294. Il ramo primogenito dei conti di Fondi si estinse nel 1327, in Giovanna, che sposò Loffredo, della illustre famiglia Gaetani e perciò ne aggiunse il cognome al proprio. Ha, inoltre, goduto nobiltà a Benevento sin dal 1268
