Antichissima famiglia del Friuli, di origine germanica, e che trae il nome da un castello, chiamato delle Due Torri, che fu costruito poco lungi da Aquileja coi ruderi della distrutta città per la difesa dalle incursioni e prese il nome dei proprietari detti Strassau e più tardi Strassoldo. Tra i personaggi più antichi, le cronache ci ricordano un Buonamaro, valoroso guerriero che combattè contro gli Avari nell'esercito di Pipino, re d'Italia; un Ugone, conte del Friuli, inviato da Carlo Magno a Niceforo, imperatore di Costantinopoli; un Ricindo che nel 1189 recatosi in Terrasanta con l'imperatore Federico I, morì combattendo contro gli infedeli. Ottone il Grande, nella sua prima discesa in Italia, dichiarò libera la famiglia Strassau che sino al sec. XVI portò questo nome italianizzandolo poi in Strassoldo. Lasciò chiara fama di sè, nel sec. XVII, un Riccardo che comandando la fortezza di Gradisca, sostenne un'eroica difesa contro i veneti
